Solo is an Irresistible Read

Looking for a good psychological thriller to curl up with this summer? Solo by author Mike Kilroy is a science fiction novel that will leave you wanting more. This intriguing book will keep you guessing as you try to understand the protagonist, Solo’s, state of mind.

I was really excited to read this book, as post-apocalyptic survival books are some of my favorite. This one offers so much more than what you would expect.

Learn more about this one-of-a-kind thriller in my in-depth review of this gripping novel.

What I Loved About Solo

One thing that I loved about Solo was how the story was built. From a mechanical standpoint, its amazing. We are immediately thrown in to a setting that is tranquil and unique – yet completely fake. The break in reality and surrealism in the opening is spot on. It’s more than enough to get you engrossed within the first few minutes of reading it.

Another thing that I really loved was the unique names throughout the book. Solo and Eye Lyds both have personalities that seem to really shine and it all starts with the name. I know that he doesn’t know his name, but I really liked the names he came up with or that others gave him.

Plot of Solo

I obviously don’t want to give too much info about the plot away. As a thriller, every twist and turn is important for the reader to discover on their own. The story does follow a man with a shattered mind as he tries to discover himself. He dances with a mannequin and remembers flickers of an experiment. Solo tries to pick up the pieces of his life and tries to remember who he is. He constantly moves back and forth between real and fictional, much like a person would after a traumatic experience. Solo is about the suffering of man.

This all takes place in a dystopian environment, giving it a very unique and unexpected feel. When I think of post-apocalyptic environments, I tend to think of the extreme. Solo blurs the lines between the Before and the After frequently. While there are a lot of aspects of a post-apocalyptic novel, the focus tends to be more on the characters. It is realistically written, full of pop culture references and brilliant foreshadowing.

Again, I can’t give too much away, but it all builds up to a great climax. In fact, the ending is my favorite part. This makes the story very worthwhile and a perfect summer read. It’s well written and has realistic twists throughout, which allows you to easily get engrossed.
